TORTURING NURSE INTERVIEW
Currently, the noise scene in China consists of a small group of individuals, mostly functioning out of Shanghai. They hold a variety of shows for bands in China and sometimes foreigners. Support seems a little stronger than it ever did in the West, and though still a marginal genre as much as anywhere else, noise in China is slowly developing, mainly taking cues from the heyday of Japanese noise in the 80s and 90s. Eventually, it may start to surprise us, and if it does, you better believe Torturing Nurse is going to be behind it. Arguably China’s most important underground band currently, we gave Junky an interview to learn more about them.

VASSBOTN are a noisy sound-tyrant triple play that count ‘master of static’ Lasse Marhaug among their ranks. Following a magnificent debut on the Obscurex label last year, this cassette is only the second official document of their so far calamitous and precarious tenure on planet earth. A thirty minute battering-ram of a track continually asserts and diminishes, arrives and departs, begins and concludes. TORTURING NURSE have been beaming transcendental baffle-noise from their Shanghai home for over 7 years and this latest transmission is as off-kilter and as out of whack as ever. 30 minutes of processed field recordings, echoing signal generators and cracked electronics. Cut ‘n’ paste loopery drips and oozes over droning static while contact mics are loved and abused in equal measure.

About 12, 13 years ago, a couple film students from NY decided they wanted to make a full-length documentary film about noise – they started their project with Merzbow, Borbetomagus and Controlled Bleeding and next on their list was me and Prurient (this was when he was still in Providence) – we made arrangements to meet at my shop and those guys showed up with a ton of gear – after interviewing Dom, they sat me down and started asking these weird philosophical questions that made no sense – they were trying hard to get me to agree with their notion that noise is about the decay of society, the corruption of mankind and stupid shit like that – and I really didnt know how to respond to that so finally I just got pissed and said something like “You guys dont know what you’re talking about, noise aint about that crap, its all about love and joy – Noise is the greatest thing ever, its a fuckin’ blast!” And ever since then I made The True Sound Of Love my rally call – and as far as I know, those guys never finished their film.
