In San Francisco in 1991, The Haters performed by first tearing paper, and then smashing up the metal objects with crowbars and large hammers. The records were thrown about by both performers and audience members alike. Many from the audience joined in on the smashing as well.

On April 25 2002, in Bremen Germany, GX Jupitter-Larsen did an 18 minute variation of the “Dirwyn” performance with his noise belt (the U.T.B.) used for additional sounds. The roar-like buzz led to some long hard throbbing. Hear a short excerpt of the noise HERE !

On April 15 1991 in San Francisco dirt was flying! While one member of The Haters used an amplified shovel to dig dirt from a wheelbarrow to a large shallow box, another member used an unamplified shovel to dig dirt from the same box back to the wheelbarrow. Collaterally, two other members tore paper. Throwing the pieces over the two that were digging. Off to one side, a fifth member did a live mix of the amplified shovel with pre-recorded sounds of fire, glass smashing, auto crashes, and explosions. During this ten minute performance, the audience quickly became inspired to an enraptured silliness. Running amok while covering most of the club in a thin layer of dirt and torn bits of paper.
On April 12 1986, the original ATA space, on 7th Street in San Francisco’s South of Market area, was dressed up as your typical living room. Four members of The Haters took turns damaging phonograph records and then playing them on your typical home stereo set. After having been played for a bit, each record would then be hurled into the audience. After awhile, people started throwing the records back at the performers. The flying vinyl lasted 25 minutes. Listen to a brief excerpt HERE

On March 27, 1992, four members of The Haters each used a clici-clic to pop holes through numerous sheets of tinfoil & paper. For 20 minutes, the sound of the crushing was amplified into an ear-piercing blob of noise galore. Projected onto a large screen just behind the performers, a 1961 black & white film of assorted hooded wrestlers involved in various matches.

On Jan 23 1993 in Denver, two members of The Haters, each with a live mic in hand, stood on either side of a duel-wheel bench-grinder mounted on a small table in the middle of a club stage. Sparks were flying as their microphones were slowly pushed into the grinding wheels. A third member electrically manipulated the motor sounds from the grinder into an oscillation of thick distortion.

Nov 24, 1988 Denver: Three members of The Haters were involved. The stage was under a viaduct near the city centre. The main props were numerous glass bottles, two sofas, and the cab of an abandoned semi. The sofas were cut up. The glass was smashed. And the truck was set on fire.
Here’s side A of the Cultivating Calamities 10 inch mini LP, released on Vinyl Communications in 1997. The sounds came from GX Jupitter-Larsen dragging a tin funnel on a turntable of sandpaper: HERE
